2026 - Ahead of the second anniversary of the June 25th, 2024
anti‑Finance Bill demonstrations, families of slain Gen Z protesters have
issued six demands to the Government.
In a letter dated Thursday, June 18th, and
addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the parents of slain
protester Rex Masai notified police of a peaceful march
scheduled for June 25th.
Gillian Munyao and Chrisphine Odawa, Masai’s parents,
recalled their son’s death during the protests, accusing security officers of
using excessive force.
“Our children were exercising their constitutional right to
protest… They were murdered in cold blood, many shot in the back while
fleeing,” the letter stated.
The families announced plans for a procession to Parliament
and vigils across all 47 counties.
Their six demands include: investigations and prosecutions
of police officers linked to killings and disappearances; a formal public
apology; declaration of June 25th as a national holiday and
unveiling of a monument for Gen Z heroes; meaningful participation of victims
in reparation processes; transparent compensation for survivors and families;
and guarantees of non‑repetition through police reforms and stronger oversight.
They urged police to facilitate the commemorations in line
with constitutional provisions on peaceful assembly.
“We expect your officers to respect Article 37 of the
Constitution,” the letter concluded.
Siaya Governor James Orengo and PLP party
leader, Martha Karua,
led the families to Vigilance House to deliver the notice.
They were also joined by former Chief Justice Willy
Mutunga, Kivutha
Kibwana and Gitobu
Imanyara.
