- Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna, has addressed growing calls from his
supporters urging him to run for the Presidency in the 2027 General Elections.
Speaking on Tuesday, May 5th, Sifuna noted that
vying for the country’s top seat is not a personal decision, emphasizing the
need for strong political structures and collective input.
He explained that his experience as Secretary General of
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has given him valuable insights from senior
leaders on what it takes to mount a serious presidential bid.
“That decision is not an easy one, and I don’t think it is a
decision I can make on my own. I have been the Secretary General in ODM for
nine years, and I have been there to learn from senior political figures,” he
said.
Sifuna stated that certain key pillars must be in place for
both him and the Linda Mwananchi movement to stand a realistic chance in 2027.
He added that their primary focus is not necessarily to
elevate him to the presidency, but to drive meaningful change in the country.
There are certain pillars that must be in place for one to
have a chance of winning an election.
“We are not people who just get involved in things simply
because we want to please others,” Sifuna said.
The Senator revealed that the Linda Mwananchi faction is
currently holding rallies across the country to assess public support before
making any major political decisions.
He cautioned against equating large crowds at rallies with
guaranteed electoral success, noting that only a handful of meetings have been
held so far.
He further pointed out that the movement is yet to penetrate
the vote-rich Mt Kenya region, a key battleground in Kenyan politics.
According to Sifuna, ODM has historically struggled to gain
significant backing in the region, making it crucial for the team to engage and
understand its political dynamics.
“We have not yet visited Mt Kenya region, and that is where
the votes are.”
“You cannot ignore the votes from Mt Kenya, and as Secretary
General, I saw our party struggling to gain support there.”
“I have to be sat down and taught the politics of the
mountain,” Sifuna added.
The Linda Mwananchi movement, which includes leaders such as
James Orengo, Babu Owino, and Godfrey Osotsi, has emerged as a notable
political force ahead of the 2027 elections, holding rallies in several towns
as it builds momentum.
