Thursday, March 5, 2026 - Traders in Nairobi’s Roysambu area are counting heavy losses after their stalls were demolished during a night operation aimed at reclaiming road reserves along the Thika Superhighway.
The demolition exercise, which took place on the night of
March 4th, 2026, targeted kiosks and makeshift stalls said to have
been built on public land on both sides of the busy highway.
The operation has left hundreds of small-scale traders
jobless, sparking outrage among business owners who depend on the roadside
businesses for their livelihoods.
A heartbreaking video circulating online shows a young
female trader breaking down in tears as she attempts to salvage some of her
belongings from the demolished structure.
In the emotional clip, the distraught woman laments that she
had invested all her life savings into the small business, only for it to be
destroyed overnight.
She further claimed that the affected traders were not given
prior notice to vacate the area before the demolitions were carried out.
