2026 - Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, has unveiled a new
category of number plates for electric vehicles, marking a bold step in Kenya’s
transition to cleaner mobility.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 3rd, during the
launch of the national e‑mobility policy framework in Nairobi, Chirchir
announced that all electric vehicles will now be registered with distinctive
green reflective plates.
“This will be the new kid in town. All the electric vehicle
number plates will now be green, registered in green,” he said, emphasizing
that the rollout takes effect immediately.
The plates will serve as a visible signature for zero‑emission
vehicles, symbolizing Kenya’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
Chirchir encouraged motorists to embrace electric cars,
citing their cost‑effectiveness and environmental benefits.
He noted that while conventional vehicles will retain their
current plates, the Government is working toward reducing the number of fuel‑driven
cars by 2030.
The green plates had initially been tipped for launch in
2024 under former Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen but were delayed.
Now, electric vehicles will carry the distinctive plates on
both front and back, making them easily identifiable as part of Kenya’s clean
energy transition.
Kenya has committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by
32 percent by 2030, with transport singled out as a critical sector.
“The transport sector contributes roughly 25 percent of
global greenhouse gas emissions.”
“By accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, Kenya is taking decisive action where it matters most,” Chirchir reiterated.
