Friday, January 30, 2026 - Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued an apology to the United States following a controversial statement in which he announced the suspension of all cooperation between the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the US Embassy in Kampala.
In a post on his X account on Friday, January 30th,
2026, Muhoozi claimed that his earlier remarks were based on wrong information.
He confirmed that the tweets had been deleted and revealed that
he had spoken with the US Ambassador in Uganda, assuring that military
cooperation will continue.
“I want to apologise to our great friends, the United States, for
my earlier tweets that I have now deleted.”
“I was being fed wrong information. I have spoken with the US
Ambassador, and everything is okay.”
“We are going to continue our military cooperation as usual,” he stated.
The apology followed a series of posts in which Muhoozi
accused the US Embassy of colluding with opposition leader, Bobi Wine, to stage
his kidnapping.
He cited this as the reason for suspending cooperation,
including joint operations in Somalia.
He further claimed that Embassy bureaucrats had undermined
security cooperation for over a decade despite strong political ties between
Kampala and Washington.
The controversy came days after Muhoozi threatened retaliatory sanctions against the US, responding to criticism from Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who described Uganda’s recent elections as a “hollow exercise.”
