2026 - Former Education and Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, has
responded sharply to Health CS Aden Duale’s claims that he is responsible for
the challenges surrounding Kenya’s Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
In an interview on Wednesday, January 28th, Duale
accused Matiang’i of “messing up” the CBC during his tenure, crediting
President William Ruto’s administration with fixing the system.
“Fred Matiang’i was the brainchild of this CBC… We are
fixing his mess, and it is now working,” Duale said.
Matiang’i dismissed the remarks in a statement released
Friday, January 30th, accusing Duale of misrepresenting the origins
of CBC and ignoring deeper issues within the education sector.
“The real mess we are witnessing today is not the
curriculum itself, but the gross incompetence with which the administration he
serves has managed the education sector,” Matiang’i stated.
He pointed to the mishandling of the 100% transition policy
as evidence of systemic failure, arguing that poor leadership - not curriculum
design - is to blame.
“Whether they inherited CBC, 8-4-4, or 7-6-3, the outcome
would have been the same.”
“Incompetence is the only thing they execute with
consistency,” he added.
Matiang’i also cited criticism from lawmakers within the
ruling coalition, claiming that even Government-aligned MPs have expressed
frustration over the Ministry of Education’s leadership.
Defending the CBC, Matiang’i said the curriculum itself is
sound but has suffered from chaotic implementation.
He concluded with a political jab, hinting at change in
2027:
“We are ready to fix this again… When Kenyans rescue the
country from incompetence and poor leadership.”
