03, 2025 - The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered
the closure of eight major entertainment venues across Nairobi, Kiambu, and the
Coast, citing persistent noise violations.
The move, announced this week, has sent shockwaves through
Kenya’s nightlife scene, with several well-known clubs and lounges affected.
Among the establishments shut down are Kettle House on
Muthangari Drive, Boba Drinks and Café in Kilimani, Bar Next Door on Othaya
Road, Emirates Lounge in Pipeline, and Kifaru Place along Mombasa Road.
In Kiambu, Infusion Lounge and Status Lounge in Ruaka were
closed, while Speedy’s Bar and Restaurant in Watamu, Kilifi, also faced
enforcement action.
NEMA explained that the venues had repeatedly failed to
comply with environmental standards and ignored earlier Environmental
Restoration Orders.
“The Authority has continued to receive noise complaints
from the facilities even after being warned,” read a statement shared on social
media.
The crackdown follows months of heightened regulatory
pressure.
In September 2025, NEMA placed 107 entertainment facilities
on notice, requiring them to submit compliance reports detailing noise control
measures.
Noise pollution has become a growing concern in Kenya’s
urban centres, with NEMA reporting a 38 per cent rise in complaints over the
past two years.
The closures are being enforced under the Environmental
Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution)
Regulations of 2009.
