05, 2025 - Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda has urged Interior Cabinet Secretary
Kipchumba Murkomen to investigate controversial preacher James Ng’ang’a
following a viral video showing the pastor physically assaulting a congregant
during a live church service.
Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, November 5th,
Ojienda raised concerns over the conduct of religious leaders and called for
accountability.
He questioned whether any formal investigations had been
launched into the incident involving the Neno Evangelism Center founder.
In response, CS Murkomen stated that no police report had
been filed and the alleged victim had not come forward, limiting the Government’s
ability to act.
“We are witnessing many such cases in churches, but due to
loyalty and fear, few victims record statements,” Murkomen said.
The April footage showed Pastor Ng’ang’a slapping a
worshipper found sleeping during the service and ordering him to sit at the
back.
He also confronted a woman seated nearby, initially
instructing her to move as well, but relented after she defended herself.
The video sparked widespread outrage online, with Kenyans
and lawmakers demanding stricter oversight of religious institutions.
Ojienda pressed Murkomen on existing or proposed legislative
measures to regulate clergy conduct and protect worshippers from abuse.
He emphasized the need to uphold Article 32 of the
Constitution, which guarantees religious freedom, while ensuring safeguards
against public humiliation and coercion.
The Senator also called for protections for whistleblowers
who report abuse within religious settings.
