05, 2025 - President William Ruto has confirmed that Kenya is experiencing
daily power shortages, forcing authorities to implement load shedding between 5
p.m. and 10 p.m. in various regions.
Speaking in Doha, Qatar on November 4th, Ruto
revealed that the country’s evening energy demand has outpaced its current
generation capacity.
“Today in Kenya, between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., we have to do
load-shedding… our energy is not enough,” he said.
Ruto also disclosed that plans to establish high-capacity
data centers have stalled due to limited electricity supply.
One data center requires 1,000 megawatts, nearly half of
Kenya’s total output of 2,300 megawatts.
“To set up one data center, we would have to shut down half
the country,” he joked.
He emphasized the urgent need to expand Kenya’s energy
infrastructure, stating that industrialization demands at least 10,000
megawatts of power.
His remarks follow Kenya Power’s July announcement of a
record peak demand of 2,362.28 megawatts, driven by increased customer
connections and cold-season grid usage.
Kenya Power CEO, Dr. Joseph Siror, noted that demand has
risen by 46 megawatts since February and is expected to grow further as more
electrification projects roll out.
The Government is currently implementing last-mile
connectivity and targeting commercial and industrial consumers to meet rising
demand and support national development.
