27, 2025 - Siaya Governor James Orengo has dismissed President William
Ruto’s recent declaration that Kenya will become a first-world country,
pointing to the chaos and violence witnessed during Thursday’s by-elections.
Taking to social media, Orengo wrote: “We can’t be first
world if, years after Constitution 2010, we can’t hold peaceful and fair
elections. The militarization and ‘goonification’ of elections is an evil worse
than ‘mlolongo’.”
“The East African neighborhood is becoming (or has been)
extremely intolerant and despotic.”
His remarks came shortly after Ruto recently reaffirmed his
ambition to lift Kenya from its long-standing third-world status.
“By 2055, this nation will be a first-world country. We have
been in the third world for far too long… We will do this by God’s grace, the
energy of our hands, the blessing of our plans, and the unity of the people of
Kenya,” Ruto said.
“I will continue to engage all leaders until we come
together so that we can make this country a first-world country in our
lifetime. It is possible. I am persuaded that we are going to do it by God's
grace," Ruto affirmed.
The by-elections, however, were marred by violence, with
several people injured, including Homa Bay Town MP, Peter Kaluma.
