2025 - Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga on Wednesday night emotionally recounted
his final conversation with his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila
Odinga, amid growing speculation over the circumstances surrounding his death
in India.
Speaking during a State Funeral Committee briefing, Oburu
dismissed claims that the family had concealed Raila’s health condition,
insisting that the ODM leader was in good spirits just hours before his
passing.
“As I had told you before, I informed you that he was well
and kicking about and that he would soon be back in the country.”
“That was not a lie; it was the truth,” he said, visibly
grief-stricken.
Oburu revealed that he spoke to Raila the night before his
death and described him as vibrant and strong.
“He was very well until last night; I spoke to him. He was
vibrant, up and kicking,” he recounted adding that the sudden death came as a
shock to the family.
The news of Raila’s death was first reported by Indian
media, prompting questions from Kenyans online.
According to reports, Odinga collapsed at the Sreedhareeyam
Ayurvedic Eye Hospital during a morning walk and was rushed to a private
facility in Koothattukulam.
Oburu had earlier confirmed Raila’s visit to India on
October 10th, stating he was recovering from a minor illness.
“He was not in those conditions alleged,” Oburu clarified
during a press briefing in Ugunja, Siaya County.
Odinga will be buried on Sunday, October 19th, in
accordance with his wish to be laid to rest within 72 hours of his passing.
