Wednesday, September 3, 2025 - Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed claims of presence of Jubaland forces in Mandera County.
Speaking at a press conference in Busia on Wednesday,
Murkomen said the Government suspects that Somali nationals are crossing into
Kenya due to escalating insecurity in their country, but he is not convinced
they are foreign troops.
“We cannot yet confirm whether those coming into Kenya are
civilians or military forces.”
“A security analysis will determine that,” Murkomen stated,
assuring that Mandera remains under full control of Kenyan security agencies.
His remarks follow concerns raised by Mandera residents and
leaders who claim the presence of foreign troops threatens regional stability.
Murkomen emphasized that no schools have been occupied and
that complaints from citizens are being addressed.
“If it’s confirmed they are civilians, we’ll work with
Somalia to ensure their safe return.”
“If they’re criminals, our security agencies will act,” he
added.
Murkomen also suggested that the narrative of foreign
occupation is being pushed by individuals opposed to President William Ruto’s
administration, calling it a distraction from real security issues.
The statement came hours after former Chief Justice David
Maraga urged President Ruto to ensure the immediate withdrawal of alleged
Jubaland forces, citing a violation of Kenya’s sovereignty.
Maraga called on Parliament to demand transparency and a
legal explanation for the presence of foreign forces.
