Wednesday, September 3, 2025 - President Ruto’s Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs and Human Rights, Prof. Makau Mutua, has dismissed the possibility of impeaching Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, calling it a politically reckless move.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, Mutua cautioned
the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against pursuing the ouster, warning that it
could backfire and destabilize the party’s broader political strategy.
Describing the current political climate as a “silly
season,” Mutua argued that ODM’s push to remove Sakaja will weaken its
influence and fracture the inclusive governance model in Nairobi.
“If you understand politics, you should know it’s a
head-scratcher to impeach Governor Sakaja.”
“It would be an own-goal,” he said, adding that such a move
would be unthinkable even in mature democracies like the United States.
His remarks follow a dramatic pause in the impeachment
campaign after President William Ruto and ODM leader, Raila Odinga, intervened.
On Tuesday, Odinga met with ODM-aligned Nairobi MCAs, urging
them to suspend the motion for 60 days.
Ruto held a parallel meeting with Kenya Kwanza MCAs, echoing
the call for restraint.
Governor Sakaja, present at both meetings, pledged to
enhance collaboration with ward representatives, promising inclusive
consultations in managing the capital.
The MCAs had earlier submitted a petition citing grounds for
impeachment, but political tides now suggest a strategic retreat.
