RUTO now seeks help from South Korean researchers to understand Kenyan youth amid rising Gen Z protests

Monday, July 14, 2025 - In a move aimed at better understanding Kenya's dynamic youth population, the Government has announced an upcoming survey by a team from South Korea’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS).

The research, set to be conducted in Kenya, will explore the social, economic, political, and psychological challenges faced by young people.

According to the State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, the survey is expected to inform more targeted policy interventions between Kenya and South Korea.

It will be led by Prof. Jeon Only, Director of the Africa Human Resource Development Centre, and Prof. Bae Yuh Jin, Director of the Centre for African Culture and History, both from HUFS.

"The youth demographic is a global concern, and understanding it is critical to developing effective responses,” read part of the department’s statement.

The announcement comes at a time when Kenya's youth - particularly Gen Z - have taken a front seat in civic action.

On Saba Saba Day, July 7th, thousands of young protesters took to the streets across Kenya, calling out Government inefficiencies and economic injustices.

President William Ruto, while addressing the issue on July 9th, claimed certain individuals were sponsoring unrest.
