Senator OMTATAH slams RUTO-RAILA pact as a ‘Civilian Coup’ against Kenyans - ‘That MoU is nonsense’

Tuesday, March 18, 2025 - Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has launched a scathing attack against President William Ruto and ODM leader, Raila Odinga, accusing them of engineering a civilian coup through their controversial political pact.

According to Omtatah, the deal not only undermines Kenya’s constitution but also erodes democratic governance by consolidating power outside legal frameworks.

Dismissing the widely publicized memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on March 7th, 2025, as an illegal maneuver, Omtatah asserts that it aims to create a parallel Government while neutralizing institutions meant to provide oversight.

Speaking on a local radio station on March 17th, the outspoken Senator and presidential hopeful detailed how the two leaders have manipulated state structures to legitimize their actions.

He argued that the coup is unfolding through power-sharing arrangements, restructuring of parliamentary committees, and other covert tactics designed to cripple constitutional checks and balances.

“That MoU is nonsense. Article 3, Clause 2 clearly states that any attempt to establish a government outside the constitution is illegal.”

“Show me where in the constitution a broad-based government exists. It’s unconstitutional,” he asserted.

Omtatah further accused Ruto and Raila of forming a de facto government, allocating power among themselves, and reconfiguring parliamentary committees without adhering to legal processes.

He warned that these developments have left government oversight in shambles, with key institutions rendered ineffective.

“Why should there be an MoU when we have Parliament? Delegated power must be exercised through Parliament, not at KICC!”

“That is the coup—power is now being handled outside the legal structures,” he argued.

“When we elected people, we did so for some to go to Parliament and others to the State House,” he added, emphasizing the need for governance rooted in law and accountability.
