Tuesday, March 18, 2025 - If your car’s registration plate starts with ‘KD’ and it’s a Toyota, you might want to double-check your security.
A new report by the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI)
reveals that half of all stolen vehicles in 2024 bore ‘KD’ plates, making them
the top target.
The report, which documented 327 car thefts, shows a decline
from 419 cases in 2023.
However, station wagons, including the Toyota Fielder and
Subaru Outback, remain the biggest targets, making up 67.8% of stolen vehicles.
Other Targeted Vehicle Types include Lorries – 11.46%,
Saloons – 6.81%, and Pickups – 3.72%
Even car color matters! White cars (39.8%) were the most
stolen, followed by silver (16.72%) and black (15.38%).
Most stolen vehicles were valued under Ksh1 million, but
thefts of high-end cars are also on the rise.
The most expensive vehicle stolen so far in 2024? A
Mitsubishi lorry worth Ksh12.2 million.
Despite an overall decline in cases, recovery rates remain
low. Only 15.92% of stolen cars were found, though this is slightly better than
11.72% in 2023.
With vehicle thefts hitting 1,687 cases in 2023, police urge
car owners to enhance security - especially if you're driving one of Kenya’s
most wanted rides.

2. Isuzu – 12.88%
