Tuesday, March 18, 2025 - The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise caution while visiting the country due to heightened security risks.
In the advisory dated March 18th, the embassy
cited crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping as key threats, warning
that some regions pose a higher risk than others.
"Exercise caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism,
civil unrest, and kidnapping. Some areas of the country have a greater
risk," the statement read.
The advisory specifically flagged Kenya-Somalia border
counties - Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera - as high-risk due to ongoing terrorist
threats.
Tana River County and coastal areas north of Malindi were
also highlighted as dangerous due to the potential for terrorist attacks and
kidnappings.
Additionally, the embassy warned against travel to West
Pokot and western Turkana County, citing frequent bandit attacks.
A 50-kilometre radius near the Ethiopian border was also
deemed unsafe following a violent cross-border attack in February that left at
least 20 dead.
In Nairobi, Eastleigh and Kibera were identified as
high-risk zones due to violent crimes, including armed carjackings, muggings,
and home invasions.
The embassy warned that Kenyan security agencies often
struggle to respond effectively to these threats.
The advisory further cautioned U.S citizens about protests
and industrial actions that could block major highways, causing severe
disruptions.
It also warned that potential terrorist attacks could target
government buildings, schools, places of worship, malls, and hotels with little
or no warning.
