Monday, April 15, 2024 - Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematia has asked President William Ruto to fire Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome for failing to eradicate banditry in the region.
Addressing a congregation over
the weekend, the lawmaker accused Koome of sleeping on the job, instead of
adopting a hands-on approach in trying to eradicate the menace.
She argued that lives in the
region have continued to be lost while the inspector general has continued to
remain silent on the matter.
"There is the Inspector
General of Police Japhet Koome. People are killed every day yet he is in
Nairobi," she lamented.
"You can't be the police
boss in Kenya and wait for a report when people are getting killed. Why should
you wait for the report instead of going to investigate?" She stated.
Jemaita, who is a member of the
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, as a result, wants the Head of State to
relieve the IG of his duties and name his replacement immediately.
She lamented that defending the
state was increasingly becoming difficult on the backdrop of deaths in her
county.
"We are asking the
President to act on it because the task has defeated Koome. We are also in
Government and it is hard to defend the government when people are dying,"
she added.
"You cannot defend the
government when my work is to bury people every day. I am not happy to be a
leader of people who are suffering. We are asking the President because the
buck stops with you."
Jemaita's voice adds to a
growing number of leaders across the divide dissatisfied with Koome's
performance over insecurity in the region.
On April 1, Senate Majority
Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who is a member of the ruling party, asked him to
resign for failing to end the conflict.
