Thursday, October 01, 2026 - President William Ruto has paid an emotional tribute to controversial Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo following his death in a tragic helicopter crash that also claimed the life of his wife, Lucy Muteke, and other passengers.
In a statement, Ruto described Chivayo as a dear friend
whose sudden death left a deep void among family, friends, and
those who knew him across the continent.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend,
Wicknell Chivayo, together with his wife, Lucy Muteke, and the other lives lost
in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe.
“Their sudden departure is a painful loss to their families,
friends, and all who knew them,” Ruto said.
Ruto praised Chivayo's character and optimism, saying he
would be remembered for his energy, warmth, and strong belief in Africa's
future.
“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many
people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep
conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” he added.
Ruto also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families,
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the people of Zimbabwe as they
mourn the tragic loss.
The fatal crash occurred in the Marondera Rural area on
September 30, with reports indicating that six people were on board the
aircraft.
Police confirmed the incident and said investigations into
the crash had commenced.
Chivayo was known for his lavish lifestyle, high-profile
social media presence, and close ties with influential political leaders across
Africa.
His relationship with President Ruto was particularly
notable, with the businessman frequently referring to the Kenyan Head of State
as both a mentor and father figure.
However, his frequent visits to State House Nairobi and Ruto’s
family home in Kilgoris raised eyebrows, with Kenyans questioning his
relationship with the president despite being linked to multi-million fraud
deals in both Zimbabwe and beyond,
Chivayo was also accused of helping African presidents rig elections using technology.
