New Kenya Army Deputy Commander! President RUTO announces major promotions and appointments in Kenya Defence Forces



Friday, June 04, 2026 - President William Ruto has announced a series of promotions, appointments and postings within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) following recommendations from the Defence Council.

In a statement issued Friday, June 5th, Ruto confirmed the appointment of Major General John Maiso Nkoimo as Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army.

Nkoimo, who previously served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, replaces Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who has retired.

Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah was named Deputy Air Force Commander, having served as Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base.

Brigadier William Kamoiro was promoted to Major General and appointed GOC Central Command, filling the vacancy left by Nkoimo.

Brigadier Peter Kipketer Limo was elevated to Major General and appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics at Defence Headquarters.

He succeeds Major General Edward Rugendo, who has been named Managing Director of Defence Forces Welfare Services.

Ruto also extended the tenure of Kenya Navy Commander, Major General Paul Owuor Otieno, by one year.

In the Kenya Army, Brigadier Francis Njoroge Kuria was appointed Director of Medical Services after promotion to Major General.

Colonel Mark Joseph Awala was promoted to Brigadier and named Chief of Operations at Army Headquarters.

Colonel Makonani Balata was elevated to Brigadier and appointed Commander of Lang’ata Garrison, while Colonel Asma Diramo Kofa was promoted to Brigadier and appointed Chief of Provost.

Within the Air Force, Colonel Peter Karigih Kariuki was promoted to Brigadier and appointed College Secretary at the National Defence College.

Colonel Benedetta Margaret Kikechi was elevated to Brigadier and named Chief of Research and Development at Defence National Security Industries.

Lieutenant Colonel Bernadette Awar Eyanae was promoted to Colonel and appointed Colonel Plans and Programmes at the International Peace Support Training Centre.
