MATIANG’I distances himself from issuance of IDs and Passports to foreigners during his tenure as Interior CS, alleges plot to rig 2027 elections in favor of RUTO

Monday, June 15, 2026 - Former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, on Monday, June 15th, distanced himself from the scandal involving the issuance of Kenyan ID cards and passports to foreigners, insisting that the malpractice did not occur under his watch.

Matiang’i said that during his tenure, together with former ICT CS, Joe Mucheru, he established credible systems to streamline the issuance of national documents.

“When I was in the Ministry of Interior, we had sorted out all these things.”

“We had established systems and worked to clean up that place. Now, things are back to business as usual.”

“I believe that this is something that would not happen if I were the President.”

“I would deal with it with a measure of courageous decisiveness that is needed to clean up all this nonsense,” he stated.

The Jubilee presidential aspirant condemned the operation as criminal and unpatriotic, warning that it could damage the credibility of Kenya’s travel documents.

“Our passports will be downgraded, our travel documents are going to be questioned, and the credibility of our identification documents is now in jeopardy,” he said.

Matiang’i further alleged that the illegal issuance of IDs to foreign nationals was part of a scheme to manipulate the 2027 General Elections.

“That cartel of evil that is selling our documents is driven by the desire to create fictitious numbers and identities to facilitate voting of even non‑Kenyans during the 2027 General Elections,” he added.

His remarks followed Belgut MP, Nelson Koech’s claim that Matiang’i should be held accountable, arguing that most documents were issued in 2022 under his ministry.

This comes after an expose revealed that Somali, Ethiopian, Ugandan and other nationals obtained Kenyan IDs and passports for Ksh15,000, bypassing registration procedures.
