2026 - President Donald Trump’s administration has assured Kenyans,
particularly residents of Laikipia, that the bio‑isolation facility being
prepared for American Ebola patients poses no danger to surrounding
communities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 3rd, the
U.S Government said the facility is part of a broader strategy to prevent the
spread of Ebola and strengthen Kenya’s capacity to respond to potential
outbreaks.
“The bio‑isolation facility in Laikipia is part of a
holistic response to prevent the spread of the disease and lessen health risks
for the region as a whole; it does not pose a risk to nearby communities,” read
part of the statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
Beyond Laikipia, Washington said it is collaborating with
Kenya and international partners to enhance border screening, expand testing
capacity, and improve surveillance in counties considered at higher risk.
The Embassy framed the initiative as part of a longstanding
health partnership between Kenya and the U.S, citing decades of joint public
health programs.
It further disclosed that direct U.S. State Department
assistance for Ebola response across Africa has exceeded Ksh 20 billion, with
an additional Ksh 45 billion channelled through United Nations mechanisms to
support efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South
Sudan.
The assurances came two days after protests in Laikipia
turned deadly, with two people reportedly killed during demonstrations against
the planned facility.
Hundreds of residents marched on June 1st,
voicing fears over health risks and demanding transparency.
