Wednesday, March 11, 2026 - The family of Clinton Nyapara, a Kenyan man who was killed in Ukraine after joining the Russian army, held a symbolic funeral ceremony after efforts to repatriate his body back to Kenya failed.
During the emotional ceremony, relatives planted a tree in his memory, saying it will serve as a lasting memorial in place of his remains.
Family members said they had made several attempts to have Nyapara’s body returned home from the war-torn region but the efforts were unsuccessful, forcing them to proceed with the burial rites without his body.
The touching ceremony drew emotional scenes as relatives, friends and members of the community gathered to mourn him and pay their last respects.
According to the family, the tree symbolizes life, remembrance and hope, and will stand as a permanent reminder of Nyapara’s life and the sacrifice he made far from home.
They also called for prayers and support as they come to terms with the painful loss.
