2026 - Gospel singer, Daddy Owen, has joined the chorus of tributes
following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed six lives, among them Emurua
Dikirr MP, Johana Ng’eno, and veteran pilot Captain George Were.
Sharing his reflections on X, Owen revealed that friends who
had flown with the late pilot described him as exceptionally diligent.
“Today I was with my friends who were flown by Pilot George Were
& they described him as one of the most diligent pilots they knew,”
Owen said.
The singer also acknowledged the speculation surrounding the
accident, which remains under investigation.
“The incident remains shrouded in speculation; was it a case of
get-there-itis?”
“Regardless, may their souls rest in peace. It was a tragic
accident,” he added.
His sentiments echo those of politicians and activists who
remembered Were not only for his skill in the skies but also for his warm
personality.
Martha Karua shared: “One of the six who perished in yesterday’s
helicopter crash, in Nandi County, was known to me.”
“The pilot, Mr George Were, was a good man with a warm demeanour. I
am thinking of all six families, may they find strength during this incredibly
difficult time.”
Activist Boniface Mwangi also paid tribute: “I knew
one of the people who perished in that crash, George Were. He was our pilot
during the Azimio campaigns; we travelled the country with him, and he was one
of the most careful, disciplined pilots that was in that entire team.”
Captain Were, a retired Kenya Air Force officer, had a
long career spanning nearly four decades without incident until the
February 28th, 2026 crash in Nandi Hills.
Chief Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor, later confirmed the victims died from multiple injuries and burns sustained in the accident.
