Thursday, March 12, 2026 - Trans Nzoia Governor, George Natembeya, has ruled out supporting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in any future presidential bid, saying Kenya must avoid concentrating power in one region for too long.
Speaking on Wednesday, March 11th, Natembeya
argued that the Presidency should rotate among communities to prevent unhealthy
competition.
“I believe the presidency should rotate; the Mt Kenya
community has had it for over 30 years.”
“It will create an unhealthy competition,” he stated.
His remarks come amid debate on whether leaders impeached
from office can still seek elective positions.
Article 75(3) of the Constitution, under Chapter Six on
Leadership and Integrity, disqualifies individuals removed for violating the
law from holding state office.
Elective seats such as President, Deputy President,
Governor, Senator, MP and MCA fall under this category.
However, in practice, eligibility often depends on the
grounds of removal and subsequent court interpretation.
Natembeya also cautioned the Linda Mwananchi faction
against forming a political party, warning that splintering the opposition
could inadvertently strengthen President William Ruto’s chances of re-election
in 2027.
“It will be a disaster because the views they are expressing
are views of the opposition. If they branch off, they reduce our votes and help
President Ruto get another term,” he said.
Natembeya clarified that he is not part of the Linda
Mwananchi wing, describing it as an internal ODM matter.
“I have never been to any of their events. For us who
remained in Azimio, we are innocent bystanders, hoping it ends well,” he added.
Natembeya’s bold declaration underscores the growing
tensions within the opposition as 2027 politics begin to take shape.
