Friday, February 20, 2026 - Murang’a Woman
Representative, Betty Maina, has come under criticism online after a video
surfaced showing mothers dancing during an empowerment event before receiving
food donations.
In the clip circulating on social media, a group of women
are seen dancing as they queue during what is said to have been a community
outreach programme where beans were being distributed.
Reports indicate that the women were required to dance
before receiving the food items, with critics terming the act demeaning and
unnecessary.
Some social media users expressed concern over what they
described as the dignity of beneficiaries during empowerment initiatives,
arguing that assistance should be offered without conditions that may appear
humiliating.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has previously
criticized Betty Maina over similar programmes, accusing her of demeaning
mothers under the guise of empowerment.
