Wednesday, February 04, 2026 - Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has hit back at the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair, Jim Risch, following remarks accusing him of “crossing the red line.”
In a strongly worded post on his official X account on
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, Muhoozi dismissed threats of sanctions
from Washington over a tweet he had earlier deleted.
The row stems from a tweet Muhoozi posted addressing the US
Embassy in Kampala, in which he accused American officials of aiding opposition
leader, Bobi Wine’s escape.
Though the tweet was later deleted, it prompted Risch to
propose sanctions and a review of security cooperation with Uganda.
“Commander @mkainerugaba has crossed a red line, and now the U.S.
must reevaluate its security partnership, which includes sanctions and military
cooperation with Uganda,” Risch stated on January 31st.
Muhoozi questioned the basis of the accusations, insisting that
his actions had been misrepresented.
“My name is not ‘Commander @mkainerugaba’. My name is General
Muhoozi Kainerugaba. What ‘Red line’ have I crossed according to you?”
he wrote.
The Ugandan military chief went further, daring the US Government
to reevaluate its military ties with Kampala.
“You can re-evaluate whatever you want as far as our co-operation
is concerned but you will never DEMEAN and DEGRADE us. You will never make us
your slaves,” he added.
The US has since dismissed Muhoozi’s apology, describing it
as hollow.
“The president’s son, and likely successor, cannot just delete tweets and issue hollow apologies. The U.S. will not tolerate this level of instability and recklessness when American personnel, U.S. interests, and innocent lives in the region are at stake,” Risch added.
