05, 2026 - Kisumu Woman Representative, Ruth Odinga, has cast doubt on the
proposed pre-election agreement between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)
and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking on Thursday, February 5th, Ruth came to
the defence of ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who had earlier questioned
the non-implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between
the two parties in March 2025.
Sifuna’s remarks drew sharp criticism from pro-Government
politicians, who branded him a party rebel.
Ruth dismissed the attacks, drawing parallels with ODM
leader, Raila Odinga’s history of defiance.
“If indeed he is a rebel, then how many times was Raila Odinga one?”
“Even in the ‘nusu mkate’ Government, Raila would still stand his
ground,” she said.
She further asked: “If the MoU has not been honoured, with less
than 30 days to its expiry, what is so treasonous about Sifuna publicly
declaring it dead?”
The legislator questioned whether President William Ruto
could be trusted to honour a new pre-election pact, given the failure to
implement the existing MoU.
“How sure are you that President William Ruto will honour the
pre-election pact you are all talking about? Will he use a different
signature?” she posed.
Ruth insisted that she will maintain her position despite
being labelled a rebel.
“I must put these here so that when the going gets tough, you won’t
accuse me of being mute,” she added.
Her remarks come amid growing divisions within ODM, with
some members backing Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid while others, including Sifuna
and Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, strongly oppose it.
Sifuna has vowed to quit the party if it endorses Ruto,
stressing that personal conviction outweighs party loyalty.
