Monday, February 16, 2026 - A recent video of South Sudan’s long-serving President, Salva Kiir, captured during the African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has reignited concerns about his ability to effectively discharge his duties as Head of State.
In the clip, which aides reportedly tried to block
journalists from recording, the 74-year-old leader is seen walking slowly and
appearing visibly frail, flanked closely by bodyguards.
The footage has quickly spread online, fueling speculation
about his health and fitness to lead.
Kiir, who rose to power in 2005 following the tragic death
of Dr. John Garang in a helicopter crash, has remained at the helm of South
Sudan through years of conflict, fragile peace deals, and ongoing political
challenges.
His latest public appearance has intensified conversations
about aging African leaders who cling to power even as questions mount over
their capacity to govern.
