2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims by
Githunguri MP, Gathoni Wamuchomba, that he is coercing her to join the
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Speaking on Monday, January 12th, Gachagua
insisted that pressure on Wamuchomba is coming from her constituents, not from
him.
“Coerced by who? It is the constituency. If they are telling
her she is not DCP, she is gone. What can I do about it? Mine is just to sell
DCP.”
“I am not asking her to join; I am saying if you want to be
elected, come to DCP,” he said, adding that voters, not leaders, determine
election outcomes.
Gachagua further distanced himself from accusations of
intimidation, saying his role is only to set the political tempo in Mt Kenya.
“The constituents are intimidating her, not me. I have not
told anybody not to join any other party.”
“I have just told people to join DCP,” he added.
His remarks come days after Wamuchomba alleged that Gachagua
had resorted to threats and insults to push her into DCP.
In a January 5th statement, she recalled similar
tactics during his tenure as Deputy President when she opposed the Finance Bill
2023.
Wamuchomba also questioned Gachagua’s leadership claims,
noting that official records do not list him as a registered DCP official.
She accused Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa of being used to
undermine leaders who refuse to align with the party, while still holding
office under UDA.
Challenging DCP’s strength, she urged Senators linked to the
party to resign and seek fresh mandates.
Wamuchomba reaffirmed her loyalty to UDA, declaring: “I’m
not joining the DCP Party, and I’m in UDA till 2027.”
