2026 - A day after Kiambu Governor, Kimani Wamatangi’s businesses near
Nyayo Stadium were demolished, the High Court has frozen his bank accounts in
connection with a Ksh813 million graft case.
Justice Benjamin Mwikya issued the orders on Thursday,
January 15th, following an application by the Ethics and Anti‑Corruption
Commission (EACC).
The ruling bars Wamatangi, his wife, children, and 10
associates from accessing the funds until February 4th, when the
matter will be mentioned in court.
EACC argued that the contested funds were proceeds of
corruption and risked being withdrawn or concealed without preservation orders.
Justice Mwikya agreed, noting that no such orders were in
place when the case first appeared before the trial court.
“In my mind, the preservation orders were not in force when
this matter appeared before the trial judge.”
“Had they been in place, the court would have addressed the
merits of the prayers in the application dated November 4, 2025,” Mwikya said.
“I therefore agree with the plaintiff’s counsel that the
circumstances have changed, and in the interest of justice, I grant prayer to
the plaintiff’s application until February 4th, 2026,” he added.
Wamatangi is accused of irregularly awarding tenders to
companies linked to his family during the 2018/2019 and 2021/2022 financial
years, when he chaired the Senate Standing Committee on Roads and
Transportation.
The Governor, who visited the demolition site on Wednesday,
described the actions as political persecution.
“What has happened is purely political and intended to
silence me and intimidate me,” he said.
