Thursday, January 15,
2026 - The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has outlined the fate
of motorists whose driving licences have been suspended, as part of its
intensified crackdown on rogue drivers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 15th,
NTSA confirmed that it operates a centralised database containing records of
all drivers whose licences have been suspended or revoked.
The clarification followed public concerns that rogue
drivers could easily move from one SACCO to another and continue operating
despite licence revocation.
According to NTSA, once a licence is suspended, the driver
is barred from joining or operating under any registered SACCO in the country.
The Authority further explained that such drivers must
return to a registered driving school for retraining before their licences can
be reinstated.
“We have the database.”
“Once the driving licence is suspended, the driver cannot
join any SACCO.”
“He or she must go back to a driving school to train
afresh,” NTSA stated.
The Authority also addressed fears that suspended drivers
might seek employment in private transport companies outside the SACCO system.
NTSA assured the public that all driver records are
digitally accessible to employers through the NTSA service portal and mobile
app, which are automatically updated.
The clarification came shortly after NTSA suspended a driver
and conductor captured in a viral video recklessly operating a vehicle, with
the conductor seen pushing a girl standing by the roadside.
The incident, which occurred on December 31st,
sparked widespread outrage.
Following investigations, NTSA confirmed that both
individuals had been disengaged by their SACCO, and the driver’s licence was
suspended after he failed a retest.
