Thursday, December 11, 2025 - Kenyan environmental activist, Truphena Muthoni, has captured the nation’s imagination with her extraordinary 72-hour tree-hugging challenge, a feat that drew thousands both online and offline.
Her TikTok livestreams became a sensation, with nearly
45,000 viewers tuning in at one point, showering her with virtual gifts ranging
from roses and hand hearts to premium items like Lions, Fireworks, and the
coveted TikTok Universe.
On TikTok, gifts are purchased with Coins and converted into
Diamonds for creators, which can be cashed out.
With Universe gifts valued at over Sh72,000 and Lions at
about Sh51,000, Truphena’s premium rewards alone pushed her earnings past the
half-million shilling mark.
The support didn’t stop online, Kenya’s leading local
gamming company, ODIBETS, pledged Sh 1 million for her record-breaking success,
while a travel firm offered a luxury three-night holiday in Mombasa, among
other offers.
Muthoni completed the marathon embrace outside the Nyeri
Governor’s Office, where hundreds braved rain and cold to cheer her on.
As she crossed the 72-hour mark, the crowd erupted in song,
dance, and ululations, marking a historic moment.
According to the 22-year old, the challenge was a call to action against deforestation and a reminder of the urgency of climate change and she becomes Kenya’s most influential young voices in environmental activism.
