Tuesday, December 02, 2025 - President William Ruto has dismissed speculation that he is seeking to extend Kenya’s presidential term limit, insisting that such claims are unfounded.
Speaking at State House on Tuesday, Ruto addressed growing
chatter about a possible constitutional amendment, stressing that he has no
intention of pursuing an extension beyond the current two‑term limit.
“I said that the other day, and some people with bad manners
went around claiming that I want to be President for twenty years. Completely
foolish people.”
“Do they think I’m crazy? People seem to think being President
is easy.”
“I am actually waiting for the day I leave this office so
someone else can take over and move things forward,” Ruto remarked.
The Head of State added that his focus remains on
strengthening Kenya’s economy and governance rather than altering the country’s
democratic framework.
The claims emerged after Ruto, on Friday, November 28th,
questioned what the country would look like if the affordable housing programme
continued for the next 20 years.
“If this work of building houses and markets across the
country has taken two years, how about ten years, or twenty years? Won’t Kenya
change?” he posed.
A section of social media users interpreted the remarks as
signaling a plan to extend his term and serve beyond the two terms of five
years each anchored in the constitution.
