2025 - United States President, Donald Trump, has lauded Kenyan athletes
for their remarkable performances at past Olympic Games, describing them as
among the finest runners in the world.
Speaking on Thursday, December 4th, Trump said he
has followed Kenyan athletes for many years and continues to admire their
dominance on the global stage.
With the 2028 Olympics being held at Los Angeles, Trump extended a special invitation to President Ruto.
“The President of Kenya, we have the Olympics here.”
“They do very well in the Olympics, those runners. I don’t know what you do with them.”
“They are very good. I have been watching them for a long time.”
“We have the Olympics coming to the U.S, and you will come as our
guest,” Trump remarked.
President William Ruto was in Washington where he witnessed
the signing of a peace deal between the Democratic Republic of Congo and
Rwanda.
Kenya also signed a landmark Ksh.208 billion Health
Cooperation Framework with the United States, aimed at strengthening health
financing and service delivery.
Trump’s comments came just days after three Kenyan stars
were honoured at the World Athletics Awards 2025.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi was crowned Men’s Track Athlete of the
Year after winning gold in the men’s 800 metres at the Tokyo World
Championships in a record 1:41.86.
Marathoner Sabastian Sawe was named Men’s Out‑of‑Stadium
Athlete of the Year following victories in London and Berlin, while 17‑year‑old
Edmund Serem earned the Men’s Rising Star award after clinching bronze in the
3000m steeplechase.
Kenya’s dominance in middle and long‑distance running
remains unmatched, with athletes securing 21 of the 30 medals ever contested in
the steeplechase event.
