Wednesday, December
03, 2025 - U.S President Donald Trump has announced a new directive halting
all immigration applications, including green card and citizenship processing,
for immigrants from 19 non-European countries.
The order, issued on Wednesday, extends restrictions to
several African nations such as Somalia, Burundi, Chad, the Republic of the
Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya and Sudan.
Kenya, which had been the subject of speculation over
possible inclusion, was spared.
The development coincided with President William Ruto’s
arrival in Washington on Trump’s invitation, where he is attending high-level
engagements.
The memorandum lists Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo,
Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Yemen among the
nations facing the most severe restrictions, including full suspension of
entries with limited exceptions.
Countries previously subjected to partial restrictions - Burundi,
Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela - will now undergo
heightened scrutiny.
The policy places an immediate hold on pending applications
from immigrants originating from the affected countries.
The administration referenced recent incidents allegedly
linked to immigrants, including a national guard attack, to justify the move.
Meanwhile, President Ruto is in Washington to witness the
signing of the historic DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement alongside Presidents Paul
Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi.
He will also oversee the signing of the Kenya-U.S Health
Cooperation Framework.
