DCI issues detailed update on fatal crash that claimed former Lugari MP, CYRUS JIRONGO’s life as CCTV footage emerges

Tuesday, December 16, 2025 -The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a comprehensive update on the probe into the death of former Lugari MP and United Democratic Party leader, Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, the DCI confirmed that the crash occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m. and involved Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz, registration number KCZ 305U, and a Climax Company Ltd bus, registration number KCU 576A.

The collision resulted in a head-on impact that pushed Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus stopped roughly 50 metres away.

A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene.

Detectives secured exhibits and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which has since been subjected to initial analysis.

The footage shows Jirongo driving into the station at 2:18:40 a.m. but leaving without refueling. At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped at the exit, and nine seconds later made a right turn back towards Nairobi. At 2:19:25 a.m., the bus rammed into his vehicle.

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated and released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is expected to report back to Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22nd.

The DCI has also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom provided personal accounts of the incident.

Investigations remain ongoing, with detectives examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant.

Additional statements will be recorded from bus passengers and other witnesses.

The DCI conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family and assured the public of impartial, thorough investigations in line with the Constitution.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations conveys its condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo and assures the public of its commitment to conduct thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law,” the statement concluded.
