2025 - A sombre mood has engulfed Machakos Girls High School after
Nicodemus Mutuku, a Kenya Junior School Education Assessment examiner,
collapsed and died while marking the recently concluded national examinations.
Mutuku, who had been stationed at the centre since November
7th, was serving as team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports
paper when tragedy struck.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere, confirmed the
death in a statement, noting that Mutuku was serving as a team leader for the
Creative Arts and Sports paper and had been actively involved in the exercise
before his sudden demise.
He was part of the team of examiners overseeing the month‑long
assessment.
Njengere described Mutuku as a dedicated professional whose
contribution to national examinations had been invaluable.
“He was an experienced, diligent teacher, and we have,
indeed, lost a gem,” he said.
The council highlighted Mutuku’s long career as an examiner,
having previously served under the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education
system before the transition to the Competency‑Based Curriculum.
He was currently teaching at Nduluni Junior School in
Makindu, Makueni County.
KNEC further praised his exemplary leadership during the
marking exercise, saying he ensured standards were upheld and offered guidance
to his team.
The council conveyed condolences to his family, colleagues,
and the wider education fraternity, pledging continued support to the bereaved
family.
The tragedy comes just days after four KCSE candidates died
in a road accident in Mbooni, Makueni County.
The students were travelling home after completing their
examinations when a speeding lorry lost control and rammed into a stationary
matatu at Ngoluni Stage, killing them instantly.
