Monday, October 13, 2025 - Former Cabinet Secretary and President Ruto’s Advisor, Moses Kuria, has announced his intention to run for Nairobi Governor in 2027, sparking mixed reactions across political circles and social media.
Kuria’s declaration follows President William Ruto’s public
frustration over Nairobi’s deteriorating state under Governor Johnson Sakaja’s
leadership, citing rampant garbage, poor sanitation and substandard
infrastructure.
“Dear President William Ruto, today you spoke to my heart…
Nairobi cannot continue to be the city of filth, garbage, and incompetence.”
“I have heard your cry.”
“That is why I will offer myself to be the Governor of the
great County of Nairobi in 2027,” Kuria posted on social media.
President Ruto, speaking during the 70th anniversary
of AIC Ziwani Church, unveiled a new partnership between the national Government
and Nairobi City County to address waste management.
He emphasized the role of private sector players in cleaning
up the city and pledged national resources to improve roads and install
streetlights.
“Nairobi cannot continue the way it is,” Ruto said, adding
that the city must become “motorable and a city in the light, not in darkness.”
Kuria’s announcement has intensified political speculation
ahead of the 2027 elections, with many viewing his move as a direct challenge
to Governor Johnson Sakaja’s leadership.
Kuria now joins Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, and former
Principal Secretary, Irungu Nyakera, who have also publicly declared their
interest in contesting the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027.
With three prominent figures already in the race, the battle for Nairobi’s top leadership is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and closely watched contests in the upcoming General Elections.
