Tuesday, September
16, 2025 - President Ruto’s Senior Advisor Prof. Makau Mutua has stirred
political debate with claims that former Public Service Cabinet Secretary
Justin Muturi may be positioning himself to challenge former Deputy President
Rigathi Gachagua’s influence in the Mt. Kenya region.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday,
September 16th, 2025, Mutua pointed to Muturi’s decision to field a
candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election, after Gachagua’s Democracy
for the Citizens Party (DCP) withdrew, as a strategic move.
“Is @HonJBMuturi positioning himself to DETHRONE @rigathi Mt
Kenya?” Mutua asked.
“Watch out, Riggy G!”
The DCP’s withdrawal led Gachagua to endorse the Democratic
Party (DP) candidate, citing the need to build unity among opposition allies
ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
He acknowledged Muturi’s leadership and regional clout,
saying the seat, previously held by DP, should be retained to complete the
term.
Mutua’s remarks have sparked speculation about shifting
power dynamics in Mt. Kenya politics, especially following Geoffrey Ruku’s
appointment to the Cabinet, which left the Mbeere North seat vacant.
As the November 27th by-election approaches, Muturi’s assertiveness and Gachagua’s strategic retreat are being closely watched, with analysts suggesting a brewing rivalry that could reshape the region’s political landscape.
