2025 - Prof. Makau Mutua, Chairperson of President William Ruto’s Panel of
Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Protests, has fiercely
defended Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo against mounting
criticism over her recent appointment.
Odhiambo was named vice-chair of the 15-member panel tasked
with fast-tracking compensation for victims of public protests dating back to
2017.
Her acceptance sparked a backlash from a section of Kenyans,
with some accusing her of betraying public trust.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly
Twitter) on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, Mutua condemned the
attacks, stating, “Only WEAK and INSECURE men attack women, especially those
who are professionally successful and beyond reproach.”
Mutua expressed disappointment that some of the harshest
criticism came from male lawyers, urging them to redirect their frustrations at
him instead.
He emphasized that Odhiambo’s integrity and professional
record should not be questioned.
Odhiambo, speaking during the panel’s swearing-in ceremony
last Thursday, defended her decision, calling it a “bold but unpopular step”
rooted in her commitment to justice and the rule of law.
“Let it be known that I have in no way betrayed your trust,”
she said, adding that access to criminal justice is vital in protecting human
rights.
Despite public pressure and criticism from legal peers,
Odhiambo vowed to remain focused on victims, promising transparency and
accountability throughout the panel’s work.
