NELSON HAVI proposes FAITH ODHIAMBO’s replacement as LSK President and pledges Ksh 1 million support

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 - Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Nelson Havi, has pledged Ksh 1 million and a vehicle to support Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama’s potential bid for the LSK presidency.

In a statement released Tuesday, September 9th, Havi urged legal practitioners to rally behind Kanjama, describing him as a suitable successor to Faith Odhiambo, whose tenure ends next year.

Havi’s endorsement comes amid growing calls for Odhiambo’s resignation following her appointment by President William Ruto as co-chair of a special Panel of Experts tasked with compensating victims of protests.

Critics argue her acceptance of the role compromises the independence of the LSK, with some branding her an agent of the State.

Lawyer Levi Munyeri has vowed to initiate Odhiambo’s removal, claiming the panel duplicates the functions of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), thereby violating LSK statutes.

Odhiambo, however, defended her decision, stating that it was driven by a commitment to justice and the rule of law.

“The deaths and injuries suffered during protests must never be in vain,” she said, promising transparency and accountability.

Panel chair Makau Mutua has also defended Odhiambo, urging Kenyans to stop personal attacks and focus on the panel’s mission.

In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, Mutua condemned the attacks, stating, “Only WEAK and INSECURE men attack women, especially those who are professionally successful and beyond reproach.”

Mutua expressed disappointment that some of the harshest criticism came from male lawyers, urging them to redirect their frustrations at him instead.

Meanwhile, Kanjama has yet to respond to Havi’s endorsement.

A seasoned litigator and Managing Partner at Muma & Kanjama Advocates, Kanjama boasts over two decades of experience and has held key leadership roles, including chairing the LSK Nairobi Branch and the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum.

His expertise spans commercial, tax, and constitutional law, and he is also a certified mediator, secretary and public accountant.
