2025 - The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has issued a public alert following
reports of an alleged python sighting in Karura Forest earlier this week.
While the authenticity of the sighting and a widely
circulated video remain unverified, KFS confirmed that pythons have previously
been documented in the forest in 2019 and 2022.
In its advisory, KFS urged all visitors to remain on
designated walking and jogging paths and to report any python sightings
immediately to forest rangers stationed at the various gates.
Pet owners were also advised to keep their animals leashed
at all times.
“As a precautionary measure, all visitors are advised to
walk or jog along designated tracks only,” the statement read.
“Any sightings should be reported immediately to KFS Forest
Rangers.”
The agency added that it is working closely with other Government
bodies to assess the situation and will provide further updates as needed.
The Friends of Karura Forest (FKF), which co-manages the
forest, reassured the public that pythons are generally non-aggressive and pose
no threat unless provoked.
“They are not venomous and will not attack unless cornered,”
FKF stated.
Karura Forest, located off Limuru Road, remains a popular
destination for jogging, cycling and nature walks.
