2025 - Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has called on Kenyans to rethink
how they choose Presidents, urging voters to move away from decisions driven by
emotions and financial handouts.
Speaking during a local radio interview on Monday, September
1st, 2025, Kang’ata argued that the country’s political culture has
entrenched corruption by rewarding wealth over integrity.
He questioned why Presidential aspirants are rarely pressed
to explain the source of their money, despite flaunting vast resources during
campaigns.
“Unless Kenyans become revolutionary and stop electing
leaders based on money, nothing will change. We must ask where the money comes
from,” Kang’ata said.
The Governor faulted the trend of celebrating wealthy
candidates while overlooking their accountability, noting that voters often
cheer at campaign displays of wealth only to lament later when corruption
scandals emerge.
“Our choices as voters define the leadership we get. If we
keep rewarding those who spend the most, we should not complain when corruption
dominates governance,” he added.
Kang’ata further linked persistent graft cases to the high
cost of elections, arguing that politicians often seek to recoup campaign expenses
once in office thus undermining service delivery.
He urged citizens to embrace a new political mindset that
values ideas, integrity and track records over money and handouts.
“This nation will only move forward when we stop treating
politics as business. It is time to put service above wealth,” Kang’ata
stressed.
His remarks come as presidential hopefuls begin early
preparations to face President Ruto in the 2027 General Elections.
