Wednesday, September 3, 2025 - There was drama in the Senate earlier today after Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya sparked outrage by refusing to officially welcome a group of visiting pupils from Tharaka constituency.
In a shocking statement on the floor of the House, Gataya
dismissed the children, saying they “all look hungry” and therefore had no
business being paraded in the Senate gallery.
His remarks sparked an uproar, with Kitui Senator
immediately calling him out, accusing him of humiliating the young learners
instead of using the opportunity to inspire them.
The incident left manySenators divided, with some demanding
that Gataya withdraws his remarks and apologizes to the pupils and their
teachers.
