2025 - In a surprising political twist, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa
has announced that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will not field a
candidate in the upcoming Malava parliamentary by-election.
Instead, ODM will back United Democratic Alliance (UDA)
nominee, David Ndakwa.
Speaking on Monday, September 22nd, Barasa, who
also serves as ODM’s Kakamega County Chairperson, said the decision was driven
by a desire to promote unity and development in the region.
“We have decided to support David Ndakwa as part of a
broad-based approach to governance.”
“Our focus is on service delivery and continuing the
projects initiated by the late Hon. Malulu,” he stated.
Barasa dismissed claims that the move undermines ODM’s
principles, calling it a strategic step to ensure effective leadership.
He pledged to mobilise ODM supporters to campaign for
Ndakwa.
“Nguvu zetu zote tutaweka hapa ili tuhakikishe watu wa
Malava wamemchagua Mheshimiwa Ndakwa.” He said.
Ndakwa secured the UDA ticket with 6,477 votes, defeating
Ryan Injendi who garnered 3,783.
He will now face Seth Panyako (DAP-K), Edgar Busiega (DCP),
Wilberforce Tuvei (Kenya Moja), and Joab Manyasi (DNA) in the November 27
by-election.
The Malava seat became vacant following the death of MP,
Malulu Injendi, earlier this year.
ODM’s endorsement of a UDA candidate is seen as a major
political blow to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been keen on
consolidating UDA’s dominance in Western Kenya.
