Monday, September 22, 2025 - ODM party leader, Raila Odinga, has signaled the possibility of the Orange Democratic Movement fielding a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Elections, despite recent political cooperation with President William Ruto.
Speaking during ODM’s 20th anniversary
celebrations, Odinga urged party members to exercise restraint and avoid making
premature declarations about the party’s electoral strategy.
“Don’t commit the party to things that have not been
discussed.”
“Who told you ODM doesn’t have a candidate in 2027?” he
posed.
Odinga emphasized that ODM has a clear internal roadmap and
that decisions on its presidential bid will be made at the appropriate time.
His remarks come amid growing tension within the party, with
some members threatening to exit if ODM backs Ruto in 2027.
Among the dissenting voices is Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna,
who recently stated that personal conviction should not be suppressed by party
loyalty.
“Raila himself has said ODM is a democratic party. Yet some
people claim I can’t hold independent views just because I’m Secretary-General,”
Sifuna said.
Odinga has remained tight-lipped on whether he will
personally vie for the presidency again, but his latest comments suggest ODM is
keeping its options open.
