Monday, August 18, 2025 - President William Ruto has warned that Members of Parliament (MPs) implicated in soliciting or receiving bribes will face arrest and prosecution.
Speaking on Monday, August 18th, during a joint
parliamentary group meeting between the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Orange
Democratic Movement (ODM), the Head of State revealed that some legislators
allegedly pocketed Ksh10 million to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
“Did you know that a few members of parliament collected
KSh10 million so that you could pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill?”
“Did you get the money?” the President posed.
Ruto criticised MPs for compromising their legislative
duties, saying such actions erode the credibility of Parliament.
He emphasized that both those who bribe and those who
receive bribes will be held accountable.
“We are not going to shame them. We are going to arrest
them. Whoever is giving and whoever is being given - we are going to sort them
out,” he said.
The remarks come just days after Ruto accused lawmakers of
turning parliamentary committees into “money-minting rings.”
During last week’s Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County,
the President alleged that MPs had been demanding bribes from Cabinet
Secretaries and Governors summoned for accountability sessions.
“There is something going on in our Legislature that we must
call out. Money is being demanded from the Executive, from Governors and
Ministers, especially those who appear before Parliament,” Ruto noted.
He further urged National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula,
to act on the issue, insisting that committees should not demand payments to
write reports or overlook governance matters.
