ODM MP names SIFUNA’s potential replacement as Party Secretary General amid rift over RUTO-RAILA deal

Thursday, July 31, 2025 - Nyando Member of Parliament, Jared Okello, has been proposed as a possible replacement for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The suggestion was made by Alego Usonga MP, Sam Atandi, who criticised Sifuna for questioning the recent agreement between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking during the commissioning of a modern education complex at St. Michael Boro Secondary School in Central Alego Ward, Atandi warned Sifuna against undermining the party’s strategic direction and threatening to leave.

“If you threaten us that you can leave ODM, you’re free to do so. Jared Okello is here - he can take up the responsibility.”

“He was schooled in England and has better English than those purporting to speak for the party,” Atandi said.

The Nairobi Senator sparked debate after stating in a Citizen TV interview that the agreement with Kenya Kwanza lacked clarity and had left many party members confused.

He warned that continued association with the ruling coalition without a clear strategy could hurt the party's 2027 prospects.

Although ODM leader, Raila Odinga, defended Sifuna’s right to express his views, several party loyalists have called him out for his comments.

Atandi insisted that ODM is bigger than any single individual, citing past defections like that of Ababu Namwamba, which did not weaken the party.
