Monday, July 14, 2025 - Authorities in India have once again arrested a Kenyan woman for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country - just months after a similar incident.
The latest case involves 43-year-old Florence Indangasi, who
was intercepted by India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) shortly
after landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
from Nairobi on July 8th.
Acting on prior intelligence, officials conducted a thorough
search of her luggage and clothing but found nothing suspicious.
However, during questioning, Indangasi admitted to
swallowing drug-filled capsules.
With court approval, she was taken to JJ Hospital, where
doctors recovered six pellets from her system.
The contents tested positive for cocaine, weighing a total
of 665.5 grams.
The seized drugs are estimated to be worth approximately
Ksh10 million in the Indian black market.
She was promptly arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
This arrest comes just four months after another Kenyan
woman, Emily Rodha, was caught at the same airport with 1.7 kilograms of
cocaine hidden in her trolley bag.
Emily had flown in from Nairobi via Doha and was reportedly
offered Ksh100,000 to deliver the consignment to a contact in Delhi.
The drugs she carried were valued at around Ksh268 million.
The back-to-back arrests have sparked concern over an
emerging trend involving Kenyan nationals being used as drug mules.
Investigations into trafficking routes between Nairobi and
India are ongoing.
Florence is likely to face at least 10 years in an Indian
prison, with a possible fine, and no parole or bail during trial unless under
exceptional circumstances.
